The Onewhero Early Childhood Centre (OECC) is not part of Onewhero Area School as such, but the mutual sharing of close facilities and resources means we're "all part of the one family". Most continue from the Early Childhood Centre into the Primary School familiar already with the people and the facilities. It is an easy transition.
The Centre is an incorporated society, managed by a parent co-operative; therefore the decision-making processes are made by the parents with input from the staff.
This Centre caters for children aged from 2 years, with an emphasis to provide quality early childhood education and care in which the needs of each child shall be the first and major consideration.
Parents and whanau are paramount in the decisions concerning their children and we encourage an open door policy. Our Centre will facilitate the development of self-esteem, confidence, independence, creativity and interest in learning for all children.
To provide this we have staff who are committed to providing a stimulating environment for children to learn and play. The staff have diplomas and degrees in early childhood education; and all staff undertake professional development to be up-to-date with current early childhood policies and procedures.
Each child has a portfolio which contains Learning Stories, artwork and photographs of the child’s time at preschool.
This well-resourced centre has an extensive outdoor play area with movable interchangeable climbing equipment, swings, a sandpit, and grassed areas for running and kicking balls. Inside are books, puzzles, painting, a family play area, blocks and trucks, plastic animals and musical instruments.
