Dear Parents
Staffing
There is to be a change to our staffing for term 2. I am delighted to be able to welcome Miss Jenna-Eve Allen back to the staff after having spent some time overseas. Miss Allen will be taking over in Room 3 (Year 4/5) as Mrs Wilson is unable to continue with full time work.
Mrs Wilson will remain on staff as a part-time teacher working in the Junior School.
Coaching Clinic
Last week we had four students attend the Central North Island Area School’s Coaching Clinics. These were intensive training sessions leading to the possibility of students being selected for the Central North Island Teams to compete in a North Island Tournament in Kerikeri in July. I am delighted to be able to report that all students represented us well, and three are confirmed in CNIAS teams. They are Jasmine Clark, for netball, Bradley Vuglar for Volleyball for Rugby. The fourth student is Alyssa Bruce and the position of her sport, soccer, is still being debated.
Softball
Last week, the Years 5 and 6 students went to Pukekawa to represent us at softball. We had six teams, and all performed well. In addition, the senior students who went with them performed admirable services, managing the teams, and umpiring during the day.
Greenie Awards
The following students were successful in the Greeenie draw this week:
Alee Cowley (Rm5)
Stacey-Lee Tapaevalu (Yr 11)
Jackets
This week we have unveiled a jacket as an addition to the school uniform. The jacket comes in sizes,10 -12-14-16-small, med and large and is lined and shower-proof. It would form a suitable alternative to the polar fleece, or if preferred, an addition to it.
The cost of the jackets is $60 each, and they are available from the office next term.
Commitment
The theme at assembly this week was commitment. Students were told that if they signed up for a team or a job or an activity, they were expected to see that through. While at times there are circumstances that mean a commitment cannot be completed, the responsibility rests with the student to talk to their activity organiser or coach or person in charge.
Examples were given of a number of students who have recently made a commitment and have seen it through. The examples were of the students who attended the CNIAS coaching clinics, the lawn bowlers and the students who have started a commitment to sports teams in netball, soccer and rugby.
ANZAC
As ANZAC Day falls in the holidays, there will not be any commemoration here this year. However, we will be presented at the Tuakau service in the Town Hall on Saturday 25th April.
Car Boot Sale
As a fund raiser for the Student Council, there is to be a car boot sale held on the school grounds on Saturday 9 May, starting at 9:00am. See further information attached to this newsletter.
SONZ
Our first voyage this year on the Spirit of New Zealand is from 6th to 16th of June and the berth will be taken by Alyssa Bruce from Year 13.
NCEA Information
We have just received three copies of a DVD from NZQA which explains the detail of the NCEA qualification system. If anyone wishes to borrow one of these to view at your leisure, please call at the office and ask.
Swimming Pool
The Onewhero Area School Swimming Pool will close for the season on April 9th 2009. No use of the pool is permitted after this date.
Lawn Bowls
Last week, Alice Barry and Roseanne Andrews represented the school in a Lawn Bowls tournament at Pukekohe. Our involvement may well have been modest, with only two players (at least one other school sent a bus load of competitors) our girls worked well as a team and competed with the best of them.
Congratulations
The winner of the Kopapa Easter Raffle was ticket number 164, Kristi Spicer.
Wanted
Have you got fruit going to waste still hanging on the tree? Do you have an over-grown feijoa hedge or an aged apple orchard; do you ever feel guilty that so many of your lovely, juicy oranges go to waste? If so, contact Mr Mann at the school so that we can arrange to pick your excess fruit. In partnership with local growers, we want to provide free fruit to our students and local community members.
SADD
We are looking for students who are interested in becoming a part of a committee for SADD (Students Against Drink Driving). They will need to be students in years 11,12 and 13. They will be involved in finding out ways to get the message of SADD across. We have been asked to form this committee by the Franklin District Council Road Safety Co-ordinator. If you would like to be a part of the committee please either tell your form teacher or come to the next student council meeting.
Muffin Wars
Next term we are looking for the ultimate muffin recipe. The canteen will sell 2 mini muffins each week for $1 and you can vote for the muffin you like the best. See Louise at the canteen for more details and get baking these holidays!
