Dear Parents
Medical issues
With the current media attention on the ‘flu, and with the onset of the usual winter ailments, it is appropriate to ask that all parents reinforce the messages we are giving students at school.
The key messages are these:
• washing hands frequently is important
• use a handkerchief when sneezing or coughing
• if there is no handkerchief, use your hand
• avoid coughing or sneezing onto others
• stay home if the coughing is persistent

Access to the school
The latest development in the building project is that the main school office is about to be remodelled. That means that Mr Fenton, Mrs Tombleson, Mrs Walter and all their books and equipment will be moving out of the present location.
Moving days will be this week and as of Monday 4 May the office will be located in a room off the main corridor past the library.
Access to the office will be either down the corridor from the eastern end or off the paved area next to the Lab. Mr Fenton’s office will be located next door to this temporary office.
Phone, fax and email access will remain the same, but there will no EFTPOS facility until further notice. Please bear with us as our valuable office staff are having to work in a very restrictive work area and under difficult conditions.
We are hopeful that this situation will only last for about 5 weeks before a final move into the new area.
A blessing of the new building will take place on Monday 25 May at 7am.
Roll
As this newsletter goes to press, the school roll stands at 318.
Help
If you have finished with those Roald Dahl books of yours at home, we could make good use of them here.
We are particularly keen to get hold of a copy of “The Twits” and “Fantastic Mr Fox” but any copies of any titles would be appreciated. Please drop them off at the office for Miss Caldwell.
Bible In Schools
I am writing to you to introduce the Bible in schools program. My name is Helen Elley and I am the co-ordinator for this program at Onewhero. I also have 2 children at this school. I have been teaching Bible in Schools at this school for the last 6 years. Previously, I have taught Religious Education to all levels of students (yr2 - yr 12) in Australia, which included working for a period of 2 years as a school chaplain at a state High School in Sydney. I also worked in schools in Taiwan teaching spirituality and values.
The other teachers who will be involved in this program are:
Ellen Grainger-Lives in Te Kohanga with 2 children 6 & 4;
Liz Bruce - has 4 children at Onewhero & has taught BIS at this school on and off for 8 years;
Nicki Riley – has 2 boys at OAS. This will be her 2nd year teaching BIS here;
Bobbi McConachie – has been teaching BIS in many of the local schools for many years & will join us this year at Onewhero;
Deborah Van Den Berg – has been involved with BIS here for over 10 years;
Wendy Martin – has 3 children at OAS &has taught BIS for about 4 years;
Margaret Harker – has taught BIS previously in Paerata and Buckland and since moving to Wairamarama will join us at OAS this year.
We realise that you are the most important people in your child’s life and we want to support you in that role. We do not want to do or say anything that may offend you or subvert that role but rather desire to work together with you to help your child know they are special, unique and no matter what happens, that they are loved. We teach a ‘values based’ curriculum seeking to encourage daily practical application of values such as kindness, respect, forgiveness, love, honesty, courage, teamwork etc. We do use Bible verses and stories to assist in this.
If you have any questions, problems, or even complaints, want to look at the material we use or if you want to contact me at any time, please feel free to ring me on 232 8883.
Yours in Friendship,
Helen Elley
Car Boot Sale
As a fund raiser for the Student Council, there is to be a car boot sale held on the school grounds on Saturday 9 May, starting at 9:00am. Prepay your spot by booking at the office for just $10.00. Coffee, tea and cakes will be available along with a sausage sizzle. All funds will go towards the school ball.
Junior Social
The Student Council is hosting a social for junior students on Friday 22 May, starting at 6:00pm. It will finish as 8:30pm and will be an opportunity for young students to have a great time together.
Junior students are those from Year 1 to Year 6. Cost will be $3 per child and $5 for two in a family and $6 per family of 3 or more.
The evening will begin with a sausage sizzle ($1.50) so that you can have a rest from making dinner. Drinks (20c) and snacks will be available for sale during the evening.
Jackets
This week we have unveiled a jacket as an addition to the school uniform. The jacket comes in sizes,10 -12-14-16-small, med and large and is lined and shower-proof. It would form a suitable alternative to the polar fleece, or if preferred, an addition to it.
The cost of the jackets is $60 each, and they are available from the office next term.
