Dear Parents

Blessing of the Administration Block

A blessing of the new building will take place on Monday 25 May at approx 6:30am. We will assemble at the school end of the main car park and the event will finish with a light breakfast in the Food Tech room. A short tour of the school will be offered. The official opening will take place on July 20.

Book Fair

The Library is hosting the annual Book Fair from Thursday 28 May through to Tuesday 2 June (excluding the weekend). Students will bring home a flyer early next week.

Book Fairs aim to help children develop a love of books and reading. To help your children find the books they like best, they can visit the library during school hours to see what books are for sale.

Students will be able to purchase books during that visit, but we also encourage parents to look over the books as well. Each child is able to take home a “wish list” showing the books they like, along with the prices. To make it more convenient, the library will be open until 3.30pm each day of the Fair. You might like to pop in when picking your children up. Some use the occasion to buy books for birthdays and Christmas.

Parents can also purchase books for the library!

Thank you for encouraging your children to read. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you at our Book Fair.

Bruce Goodman
Library Manager

Wanted

Room One would like some navy or black shorts size 5 or 6 to use as spares.

Car Boot Sale

Thank you to those who ventured out on Sunday morning to attend the car boot sale.

The profits have made a contribution to the school ball fund.

Uniform Reminder

I would like to remind all parents that the uniform code is fixed and quite clear. It does not include T-shirts showing under the uniform top, or extra non-uniform jerseys or jackets and coats.

With the onset of the colder weather, there has been an increase in the appearance of some of these non-standard items.

The school now has a uniform jacket which is available in all sizes.

Students are being reminded of their responsibilities with respect to wearing the correct uniform, and also being reminded that incorrect items will be confiscated. Persistent offenders will lose free time.

Forty Hour Famine

Last reminder that this event will be talking place this weekend. Please help to support the numerous young people who are voluntarily giving up something this weekend. The variety is interesting and ranges from the usual food deprivation through to no talking or playstations. We even have some individuals who will be living in a cardboard box for the weekend.

Last year the school raised just over $1000 and it would be good to think we can do better this year.

This year the money will be going to support children’s education and food supply in selected African and Asian countries.

Congratulations

To Margo Strydom, who has been chosen to be in the squad for the Year 7 Pukekohe Rep team for netball. Also all our teams paraded well last Saturday and earned a highly commended.

Counties/Manukau Cross Country

We have a small team of students representing the school at cross country this week. The team is Alyssa Bruce, Evie Moth, Chanelle Lawson and Quinton Keightley. The team is competing at Ray Small Park in Papakura today, Thursday.

Moto-cross team

Another first for Onewhero in 2009 – we have a team of riders lining up to compete in a school Moto-cross event, which will run this weekend. The team will compete at Ardmore on Sunday, having been postponed from last Sunday.

Junior Social

The Student Council is hosting a social for junior students on Friday 22 May, starting at 6:00pm. It will finish as 8:00pm and will be an opportunity for young students to have a great time together.

Junior students are those from Year 1 to Year 6. Cost will be $3 per child and $5 for two in a family and $6 per family of 3 or more. The evening will begin with a sausage sizzle ($1.50) so that you can have a rest from making dinner. Drinks (20c) and snacks will be available for sale during the evening.

Soccer Fixture

Below are the draws for 27 May:

Boys
vs Pukekohe A at Onewhero

Girls
vs Manurewa at Manurewa High 1

Middle School

The Middle School would love you to donate some board games that you may have lying around your home or hiding in your cupboard. These will be used to set up “Wet Day Boxes” when students are unable to go outside on miserable days.
