Dear Parents

Health issues

With the current renewed attention on the ‘flu, and the probability of accelerated spread to this country of the H1N1 virus, it is appropriate to remind all parents of the precautions that are necessary and to reinforce the messages we are giving students at school.

The key messages are these:

washing hands frequently is important
when sneezing or coughing, cover the mouth and nose
avoid coughing or sneezing onto others
stay home if the coughing is persistent.

In addition, and especially with the approaching holidays in mind, if you are travelling (especially to and from Australia) and the children are displaying any ‘flu-like symptoms at all, then voluntary isolation is important. At this time, a gram of precaution will be worth a tonne of prevention. Keeping everyone safe is our priority.

Looking ahead, there are predictions that NZ will be affected to a greater extent as we move through the winter period. As a school, we are prime site for the spread of the virus and will keep parents informed of any measures we take in order to keep our students and staff safe. We ask that parents also take a responsible approach to keeping students safe and limiting the effect of this virus.

We are in an evolving situation and if conditions in NZ change, the Government may request that parents keep students at home if they have returned from affected areas overseas even if they do not show any symptoms. If this happens, parents will receive advice from the Ministry of Health through public communications channels.

Situation vacant

There is a position available for a teacher aide here at the school. The position is part time but will cover five days of the week. Applications in writing to the Principal, stating strengths and experience.

Updating your contact details

From time to time, family and parent contact details change. If this has happened to you recently (any time this year) please ensure that the school is informed so that we can be assured that our records are as up-to-date as possible. This is vitally important in light of the message above and in case we need to get hold of you.

Career Education Years 11 – 13

As part of our Career Education programme we are running some sessions with industry speakers for our senior students over the next few weeks. We are very lucky to have some great local talent and people who are prepared to give up some of their time to come and talk to our students.

Please feel free to come along and listen in to any of these sessions if you would like to. I would also encourage you to have discussions with your children after each session. Each Friday at 12.20pm we will be having 2 speakers come and talk. The dates and industries are:

Friday 12 June – Sheep and Beef farming/A&E Nursing
Friday 19 June – Mr Motorcycles/Tourism and Travel
Friday 26 June – Police/Army
