Dear Parents
With term holidays approaching and a number of families planning to travel, both overseas and around NZ, the school is aware of the threat posed by the swine flu epidemic, particularly the risk posed by travellers returning as potential carriers. At this stage, the Ministry of Health’s advice is that if staff and students are well and symptom free after returning from an affected area overseas they can return to school and do not need to remain at home for any period after arriving back in the country, or back to the home town/city. However, this may change in the coming weeks and families need to plan for this possibility. The risk is that if an infected student returns to school and is in contact with other students and staff for even a day, the whole school could be closed for a week. The school board asks you to carefully monitor your family’s health closely as you return from overseas, or your trip within New Zealand, and if there are even the slightest flu symptoms, do not send your son or daughter back to school until you have first telephoned to check with your doctor, or alternatively checked through the MOH Healthline 0800 611 116.
Congratulations!
Last week, both Petra Lorimer and Abbey Austin represented us at the Franklin Speech Contest. Both girls spoke well and Abbey was placed in the top five of her section. She then went on to win the impromptu speech section. She had 30 seconds to prepare a speech on “Rain” and she spoke for the maximum time of one minute. This was a great effort. Abbey is displaying her trophy in the new trophy cabinet in the school foyer when it opens.
Staffing
There are several staff changes for the beginning of Term 3. These have been brought about by a resignation and an increase in roll (which is now at 325). The changes are:
Mrs Gillian Bird has resigned to take up a new position. Mr Joshua McDonald will start in Room 6 next term and be there for the rest of the year.
Miss Katharine Smyth has had her appointment in Room 8 extended to the end of the year.
Mrs Brenda McLean will be working full time from July 20 and starting a new New Entrants class in Room 3.
The present Room 3 class will move to Room 10.
Miss Jenna-Eve Allen’s position has been made permanent.
Mr Patrick Kelaiditis will be returning to work part-time in Term 3.
Parent Interviews
Normally we would have held our parent interviews in the last week of this term. As we are in the midst of several staff changes and parts of the school is still under construction, we have decided to postpone our mid year interviews to week 2 of Term 3. The new date will be Thursday July 30 and the booking sheets will come out in next week’s newsletter.
Kids for Kids Concert
Once again, we are participating in the World Vision Kids for Kids Concert with Suzanne prentice. This event will be on Wednesday 24 June and our choir will be part of a massed choir taken from the Franklin schools.
Situation vacant
There is a position available for a teacher aide here at the school. The position is part time but will cover five days of the week. Applications in writing to the Principal, stating strengths and experience.
Chicken Orders
Chickens orders for this year’s Calf Club competition are now being taken. Please complete the form attached if you wish to purchase chickens. Prices are the same as last year and delivery will be in the first week of term 3. Orders, complete with payment, must be to the school by Thursday 25 June. There will not be any chance after that date to order any chickens.
Our Calf Club day will be held on Thursday October 15.
Onewhero Community Library
From Term 3 (20 July on) the library will be open to parents and the general Onewhero community. Perhaps you want books to read to your children or books to read for yourself.
The Library Catalogue can be searched on the Internet. Click on Library and follow the links to the catalogue.
The Library is open from 10am to 2 pm. However, books can be ordered via email.
If you are a parent, books can be issued and returned via your child’s school bag. Other members of the community will have to pop in. It is best probably to visit the library personally for registration.
Any questions don’t hesitate to contact Bruce Goodman, the Library Manager.
Updating your contact details
From time to time, family and parent contact details change. If this has happened to you recently (any time this year) please ensure that the school is informed so that we can be assured that our records are as up-to-date as possible. This is vitally important in light of the message above and in case we need to get hold of you.
