Dear Parents
Teacher only day - August 6
On August 6, all the teachers of classes from Year 9 to 13 will be attending training days relating to the new curriculum. At the same time, we will be taking all the senior (Yr 11+) students to the Careers Expo in Greenlane.
Because of this, there will be no classes for students in Years 9 and 10 that day.
For students from Year 1 to 8, there will be classes as normal and the buses will run as normal.
For students from Years 11 to 13, the bus to Greenlane will leave school at 9 am and arrive back by 3pm.
Updating information
Could all parents please ensure that the contact information we hold here is accurate and up to date. We have already had some instances this week when we have tried to contact parents only to find that numbers have changed or have been discontinued.
A call to the office, or a quick visit would be really useful.
Music Festival
We are seeking names of interested students to form a choir for the Franklin Music Festival which will be held in November this year. Students themselves have been asked, but parents may wish to suggest names to us too. We are seeking students from Years 5 through to Year 8. The first mass rehearsal will be on Wednesday August 5.
Art requests
As Calf Club approaches, so does the time when we are making a variety of items ready for the display. To that end, we would like to be able to source supplies of the following:
• Ceramic tiles – left overs, broken bits anything that we can use for mosaic patterns
• Corks
• Magazines
• Long cardboard rolls from gladwrap and similar
• Chocolate wrappers (with or without the chocolate)
• Wire, (florist, No 8, bendy wire- all sorts!)
Items for this collection will be received at the office.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Shannon Loo for modelling in the Mask Section, at the NZ Body Art Awards 2009 on Saturday night (see photos). Shannon modelled a mask, cape and body painting for her mum, Jan Maree, and although they didn’t win they were called to the stage for a special commendation from the judges. Shannon had two late night rehearsals, plus all day Saturday getting painted followed by two full shows at 4pm and 7.30pm. She was the youngest model there, and may even be seen on the Erin Simpson show. They are already planning next years entry!
Also congratulations to Gavin Binnie and Wetere Pompey, who have been selected in the Counties under 45kg Development squad. If selected in the final team the boys will play a round of games against North Harbour and Auckland under 45kg teams.
Community Garden Project update
To keep you informed and following on from previous newsletters, I can tell you that the timber for the raised bed gardens has arrived, and work has started on constructing these beds,. Next in line will be a garden shed and a set of 4 picnic tables. The gardening planning has started in earnest with work on a sustainability project being undertaken by Year 8 students Their first aim is to produce a 12 month planting and growing calendar.
I would like to invite your support in our garden project. If you have any spare garden implements, we could make good use of them. We are after forks, spades, trowels, hoes, rakes, wheelbarrows and watering cans. We would also like to be able to source top soil, ready to go compost, seed trays, seeds and seedlings and any fruit trees. Any donations in this area would be appreciated and help us to make the limited funds we have go further. As we get this project stared, we welcome visitors to the school to check on our progress.
