Dear Parents

Cell-phone use at school

Despite our requests that all cell-phones are either left at home or left at the office during the day, it is obvious that a number of students not only bring these things to school, but also use them during the day.

The issue is one of safety for everyone. We have had instances where students use their cell phones to bully and harass others. There have been other times when parents actually ring their children at school and still others when a child has rung home and asked for a parent to collect them, without the knowledge of the school.

The position here is clear. There is no place for cell phones at school. If any student really just has to have a phone, then it is to be left in the office for the day and collected at 3pm.

Dental Services

As you will know, the mobile clinic is in school at the present time. Prior to the clinic arriving, the nurses were here to do some preliminary checking work.

The nurses have commented that they have found the state of dental health amongst our students to be significantly higher than on previous visits. It is clear to the nurses that this higher standard is a result of better hygiene practices amongst the students, which also means that parents must be taking extra care to make sure the teeth are being cleaned! Well done to all, and keep up the good work!

Franklin Zone Basketball

Last week we had a number of teams representing the school at the Franklin Basketball competition.

The Year 7 teams played well. Many of the opposition teams were older and bigger than our teams, but this did not discourage them. The Year 7 girl’s team drew one game and lost four others by small margins.

The Year 7 boy’s team played above themselves and won two games out of five. This is a team of the future.

The Year 8 girls worked well together and won most of their matches, finishing just out of the top placings.

The Year 8 boys did particularly well, winning five matches and drawing one. They worked well as a unit and skirmished all day, shutting down the attacking moves of the opposition teams. They won their section, which entitles them to travel to Auckland to represent Franklin in the Champion of Champions meetings next Tuesday. We wish them, well in that competition.

Mrs Ruhe is particularly proud of all her teams and the effort that all players gave to practices and to the competitions.

Congratulations

To Gavin Binnie and Atuarangi Muru, who have been selected for the under 45 kg under 13 squad for Counties/Manukau Rugby. The team will play several games against other unions.

Franklin Zone Cross country

Nine students from Year 4 to 6 and fifteen students from Years 7 and 8 represented us at the Franklin event held at the Franklin Show grounds on Tuesday 25 August. All the students performed really well in the wet and slushy conditions. The individual placings gained were as follows:

Briar Salt - 1st Yr 5 & below girls
Ceilidh Jenkins - 3rd Year girls
Margo Strydom - 10th Yr 7 girls
Nick Simpson - 7th Yr 7 boys
Reid Picot - 8th Yr 6 boys

Three of our teams were placed in the teams event. This meant that the top six runner’s placings for the group were added up and the lowest team scores were the best.

In the teams events, BeauJames Fenton and Judd Redmond were part of the second placed Year 5 boys Franklin team, and Reid Picot and Wetere Pompey were part of the Year 6 boys Franklin team which was placed 3rd.

In addition, we entered a Year 7 girls team (Ceilidh Jenkins, Margo Strydom, Emma Carey, Faye Carey, Amber Clarke and Erin Wagstaff.) This team came 3rd.
