Dear Parents

Trail Ride

The Trail ride that we were starting to advertise for early November has had to be put off for reasons beyond our control. It is now likely to take place early next year at a new venue.

Lost

One girl’s watch. Seiko brand. Red strap with red hearts on. Lost sometime in August. Any information please contact Mrs Clark in Room 5 or leave a message at the office.

Hats at school

Hats are now compulsory for all students from Years 1 to 6 and are available through the school office.

Could parents please make sure that all hats are named at the time they are purchased, and that the names are checked periodically to make sure they are still legible.

Advance notice

The Board of Trustees has approved a teacher only Day for Tuesday October 27. This will enable staff members to further their planning for the implementation of the new curriculum.

New Curriculum

Over recent months, the staff have been working to re-look at the mission statement of the school and to consider the values that the school should be promoting. Parent input into this process was sought earlier on in Term 2 and now it is time to move the process on. The revised mission statement and set of values are to be presented to the Board at their next meeting. The students are being offered an opportunity to enter a competition to promote these values in a graphic form. This opportunity will be presented at assembly on Monday. Parents are welcome to talk with students about the way in which they could promote the values of the school.

An Evening with Lynda Hallinan

The Editor of NZ Gardener (and ex-student) is coming here for a night of irreverence and inspiration, sharing with local gardeners and those interested her knowledge and expertise.

Tickets are just $15 and are available from the school office. Help us celebrate spring with wine and nibbles, raffles, spot prizes and gardening giveaways. Wednesday 21 October, 2009, starting at 7:00pm.

To assist with the fundraising for this event, a sheet of tickets will be sent home today, Friday. There will be five tickets to sell and a prize for those families selling all five. There will also be a chance for you to order tickets for the night. Participation is voluntary, but the money and all sheets will need to be returned to school on Monday, sold or not.

Senior Exams

Next week, the senior students from Year 11 to 13 will be sitting their last practice exams before the final exams in November. These exams are important as a time for fine tuning the skills of writing exam papers, and managing the time allowed. It is also important that students are adequately prepared for them. While we are doing preparation here at school, students should be spending 2 to 3 hours a night getting themselves ready as well.

Please note that all students Yr 11 to 13 are expected at school each day and when the exams are over for the day, normal classes will resume.

Saleyard Duty

Work in the Saleyard Cafe and raise money for your children’s school expenses and activities. People needed for shifts in November. Contact Helen 2328883 or email her here.

Congratulations

To Kylie Phillips (at OAS from 1989 to 1998), who has just graduated PhD (Food Science) from Otago University.

Uniforms

If anyone has second hand school uniforms that they would like to donate to the school please drop them into the office. Thank you.

Principal

E-waste Disposal

Today our planet Earth is suffering from pollution by a lot of hazardous waste. One of reasons is that people do not to dispose their waste properly. Of particular concern is e-waste, (Electronic waste), which is the term used for all waste from electronic equipment. Computers and other electronic equipment are made from hundreds of different materials. Many of these materials are hazardous and are a big threat to the planet if not disposed of properly. Heavy metals including lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic from E-waste pollute our precious land, water and even our children, if they end up in landfills.

For Franklin district, an e-waste collection will be held on Saturday 31st October 2009 from 8am to 3pm at Hall St Car Park (behind shopping mall on Stadium Dr), Pukekohe. It is an Easy Drive-Through event, where drivers are encouraged to stay in their vehicles, while staff unload everything. People, schools, churches, businesses and organization can dispose old computers, monitors, printers/scanners, mobile phones, telephones, servers and car batteries. The collected e-waste will be legally exported overseas or recycled properly. E-waste should never be disposed on the streets for inorganic collections as it becomes a big threat to our precious land.

For more information on disposal of e-waste, please visit ewaste.org.nz or alternatively, you can email us here.
