AMNESTY TIME
“Can you help us?” We are missing some of our Junior Sports tops – they are plain blue with a V neck. Could you please check in your house and if you have one send it back to school immediately.
It is also an appropriate time to clean out your bookshelves and return any school readers and/or Library books to school. We welcome them back and no questions will be asked. You can drop them into the school office.

Programming Challenge for Girls
On Wednesday 18th November Anahera Popata and Grace Jeremiah from year 10 represented OAS in a programming challenge specifically aimed at year ten girls. They were one of 19 teams from 12 schools competing at MIT. There were also parts of the national competition running in Auckland, Gisborne, Wellington and Christchurch.
The competition used the free program called Alice (which can be downloaded at http://www.alice.org) and was aimed at promoting Computer Science as an option for girls. It is a career field on which our society is very reliant, but which has many unfilled jobs, good pay, and lots of fun to be had.
The teams trained in the morning directing a diver in an undersea scene, and then faced a 3 hour challenge where they had to program a virtual dog to go around a virtual obstacle course.
Anahera and Grace won bronze medals, and gift certificates for Westfield Malls. It was a great day and the girls did fantastically well.

Onewhero Amateur Swim Club
Welcome to 2009-2010 swimming season. We are all set to go and have a head start this year as the big pool is now operational. We would like to acknowledge the School Board of Trustees, Greg Fenton and Dave the caretaker for their commitment, which has made this possible.
This year we are very pleased to welcome our coaches back, Liz Kelsey & Florence Lussi, will be coaching in the big pool. Deborah van den Berg, Angela Nesbitt & Donna Allely in the little pool. We also have Jimmy Ruiterman on board as our Senior coach. He will be training a squad of approximately 12 swimmers every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning this week. We have invited our senior club members to take advantage of this opportunity. In Term 1 2010, we will be continuing with our usual swim club lessons.
At our last meeting, the committee decided to rejoin Counties Manukau Swimming Association. This will provide more opportunities for our club, in competition and other areas.
The enrolment dates for Swim Club are at the following times:
Tuesday, 1 December and Thursday, 3 December 2009, 3.00 - 4.30pm at the Pool
If you can not make these times, please notify Donna Allely 232 8660 or Sharon Guard 232 8959 and we will post a registration form to you.
