Dear Parents

We would like to thank Larry at 100% Stevens and Jenkins Tuakau for the great discount he gave the school on the new freezer for the canteen. Onewhero Area School proudly supports local businesses.

Top Team report

It was very wet on Friday 20 February when ten mad Year Six students and several crazy but willing parents headed off to the Top Team competition at the A and P Show in Pukekohe.

As part of the competition we had to eat weetbix and then blow up a balloon, tow a tyre, do push ups and sit ups. We also played noughts and crosses. This was a running game played with nine chairs in a square shape where three people from each team had to run and sit down in a straight line just like noughts and crosses. We won that so we will be getting a prize from Pak ‘n Save.

We didn’t get into the finals, and by the end of the activities we were soaking wet but it was still fabulous to be able to go. Thank you to the parents who gave up their time to take us.

We hope the weather is better for next year’s team.

Triathlon Report

On Monday 23rd students competed at the Franklin kid’s triathlon at Clarks Beach. There were almost 400 entrants in total. While we did not come in the top 3, everyone finished with smiles on their faces and are enthusiastic to enter into more events. The 8 – 10 year olds swam 100metres, biked 4km and ran 1km, while the 11 -12 year olds swam 200metres, biked 6km and ran 2km. This is a great achievement for all. We are already looking forward to next year and hopefully a larger team.

Top placings from Onewhero were:

Catherine Lussi, 8th 9yr girls
Jade Sharp, 12th 9yr girls
Judd Redmond, 17th 9yr boys
Finn O’Keeffe, 18th 9yr boys
Kristi Spicer, 18th 11yr girls
Georgia Young, 19th, 9yr girls

Cricket Team

The Yr 7/8 cricket team, which has been training with Mr Jordan since Week 2, travelled to Mangatangi for their first game on Tuesday. Captain Nick Simpson elected to bowl first, with immediate success as Rhian Strang took a wicket with the very first delivery of the game. A number of quick wickets fell until Mangatangi’s middle order restored respectability with a solid partnership. An excellent piece of fielding from Leo Allely broke this partnership when he managed to score a direct hit on the wickets from a distance of some 20metres. Best bowling of the day was Rhian Strang who took 3 wickets for just 14 runs.

Onewhero struggled to score runs against some fast bowling, though some batsmen (Mackenzie Campbell and Nick Simpson in particular) showed some resistance. Lorenz Ewe-Gardner chipped in with some powerful batting to score 3 fours.

Onewhero eventually fell short of the required total set by the opposition. The team members are proud of their efforts and enjoyed the day greatly. The best all round performance was that of Wetere Pompey, who took 2 wickets and scored 14 runs.

Boys' Soccer Team

Calling all boys from Year 9 to Year 13 who are interested in playing soccer. We are starting training on Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 5pm. No boots required. For more details talk to Alex, Jack, Bryn or Glenn. Limited transport back to Tuakau is available (on application!).

Swimming Sports

The school swimming sports will be held on Wednesday 4 March starting at 9am. All students from Year 7 are expected to participate in this day long event. There will be events for the less able students who cannot swim a length. Students in the Junior School (Yr 4 to 6) who can swim a length or width competently will also be involved in the day. Parents are welcome to attend.

Non-participating students from throughout the school will be in class all day.

Our event will be followed two days later by the River Group event. This will be held on Friday 6 March, from 9:30am and will involve the big pool swimmers from Years 3 to 6. We would welcome offers of help as we run this day. Timekeepers are our particular need. If you can assist please ring the school to speak with Judy (extension 708).
