Dear Parents

School Reports

Last week, we wrote about the changes we are making to the school’s written reports. This week, we are adding some more background information.

Schools are now required to use plain language in our reporting and we have to clearly show your child’s progress and achievement in reading, writing and maths and in relation to National Standards for Years One to Eight.

Plain language reporting should:
• be concise.
• clearly outline a child’s progress and achievement.
• Be free of complex educational jargon.
• Use language that you can all understand.

The report should tell you tell you if your child is working at the expected level for their age, or if they are working at a level above or below the expected standard.

Reporting in relation to National Standards will include:
• Your child’s progress and achievement in relation to the standards.
• What the school is doing to support your child’s learning.
• Ways you can support your child’s learning.

Reporting on how children are doing and where they need to get helps you to support them.

If students are able to understand their reports, then you and your family will too, and your children will be able to talk about how they are doing and what help they need from home.

Canteen Weekly Special

The special for the week Monday 14 June to Thursday 17 June is mushroom soup plus roll cost $3.00

Franklin Speech Contest

Last week, we had two students representing us at the Franklin Speech Contest. Both our candidates did well, with Jemimah Elley being placed second (“St John: Kids should join!!”) and Petra Lorimer (“Are we as a nation drinking ourselves to death?”) gaining a place in the top six. Well done girls!

Swim for Life schools Challenge

All schools involved in the swim for Life Challenge who had more than 70% students swimming in the challenge went in the draw for $500.00 worth of RFD life jackets. We have won the draw and will receive the prize of life jackets to benefit of our students in EOTC activities. The following is a comment written to us as a school from Water Safety New Zealand - “this is an outstanding achievement and testimony to the obvious quality of the 'learn to swim' programme you have in place. Congratulations on your school’s excellent achievement.”

Calf Club

With this time of year approaching, it is appropriate to remind parents of the dates that are important here.

All animals entered in the Calf Club must be born after 1 July. This applies to calves, goats and lambs. All animals are then divided into groups according to age, but there should be no calves at Calf Club born after the end of August, and all lambs and goats at Calf Club should be at least three weeks old.

All animals entered in Calf Club Competition must be hand reared from within a week of birth.

Information about rearing animals for Calf Club is available on our website and from the school office.

Chicken orders are now being taken. Orders will close on June 16, for delivery early in Term 3. An order form is attached.

Forty Hour Famine

All sponsorship money should now be coming in to school. To date we have banked just over $700, of which just over $500 came from the sleep over from the students of Rooms 4 and 5. Congratulations to these students – a great effort!!!

An Important Invitation

Franklin Calf Judges in conjunction with RD1 Pukekohe are running an information day.

Saturday June 12 from 9am to 1pm.

• Talk to the judges, and discuss what they are looking for on the Big Day!!
• Purchase calf Rearing products (head collars, leads, meal, milk powder etc) at discount prices.
• Make a purchase and go into a draw to win a 19” flat screen TV.
• Free BBQ running

Enquiries to: Linda Richards, 09 236 0699 or E-mail.

It is vitally important that parents of children wishing to raise a calf this year, get the essential information about what is required. This is a great opportunity to do that.

This is especially true for first time entrants.

School Photos

Earlier in the term it was announced that the school photos would be taken in June. We have had to postpone that event and the new date is now Monday August 2. This year class, team and individual photos will be taken.

“That’s Life! Win a Carnival for you School” Competition

As a school we are collecting the tokens from the That’s Life magazine for this competition. The pink tokens can be found in issues from May 10th through to June 13th. The school that collects the most tokens will win a carnival for their school.

We would like to collect as many tokens as we can. Please take any tokens you collect to the office and drop them in the box.

Safe Bus Behaviour

Last Tuesday a letter with a Bus Code of Conduct Agreement attached would have come home to all children travelling on the school buses. Please discuss this with your child/children and ensure that the signed agreement is returned to school by 2nd July 2010.

Spirit of Adventure Raffle

On Monday 31st May the raffle for the pig was drawn and the winners are as follows:
