Calf Club

We have just been made aware, by a local farmer, of a problem that appears to be affecting many bottle-fed lambs. Some bottle-fed lambs are dying of what seems to be pulpy kidney. It is however a bloat called Abomasal bloat or Abomasitis. It can affect lambs, goats and calves and does not usually show until the animal is about 3 weeks old. The symptoms are that the animal’s stomach will become distended and the animal dies quite quickly and unpleasantly.

It appears to be caused by feeding large quantities of warm milk at a time.

The treatment and prevention is to mix the powder, following the manufacturer’s instructions, with warm water and then cooling it as rapidly as possible. The animals should then be fed this cooler milk, using less at a single feed, but at more frequent intervals. The addition of a tablespoon of plain yogurt to each litre of milk at the time of mixing the powder, appears to be effective as well.

Further information is available on the Internet. Either Google “Abomasal bloat” or check out these sites:

Fancy Dress

This year the Calf Club will be running a fancy dress section. Please get your thinking caps on for best dressed pair, child and calf/goat/lamb. Let’s see what cool costumes you can come up with. This will run after all the major ring events have been completed and before prize giving. Come on kids give it a go.

Demonstration

There will be a demonstration of leading and a discussion about animal care on Monday 20th September. This is particularly suited to those new to Calf Club and is open to parents and students. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about the Calf Club process.

Raffle Reminder

Just a reminder of one food item from each family for our Gala Day Grocery raffle please. This year’s grocery raffle is already looking very inviting. We appreciate your contribution.

Congratulations

On 5th September at Showfields Equestrian Centre Samantha Maguire (year 5) was placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd on her ponies in the training section of the dressage. Samantha was the only child competing against adults. Well done Samantha.
