Dear Parents

Gala/Calf Club Day

What a spectacular day!!!

A huge vote of thanks goes to all those folk who spent so much time in making sure this day went off so well and with a minimum of fuss. Special mention must be made of Nicky Booker, who spent many, many hours working towards the Gala Day and Marie Whitworth and Claire Bingham who also spent many hours to bring the Calf Club together so well.

Thanks also to the staff of the school who worked so well to have students produce the stunning array of indoor exhibits.

The day would not have been so successful without the support and dedication of those who ran the stalls and activities – a sincere thank you for all the effort that went into those.

And to our wider community, a huge thank you for supporting us in so many ways.

The final word goes to the students, who worked with animals, supported stalls and activities and came to enjoy the day. Thank you to everyone.

As a result of the Gala Day, the PTA is now approximately $12 000 better off, funds which are earmarked for the benefit of our students.

The Calf Club activities on the day have resulted in a team of 49 students being eligible to attend Group day next week at Harrisville. Those students have been contacted separately.

Greenie Box

The names drawn this week are Mr Badger and Daniel Riley. Both win a canteen lunch voucher.

Integrity

At the assembly at the end of Term 3, the following student was presented with a certificate recognising his participation in school activities:

Bryn Jenkins (Yr 12) for the trust engendered by him and all the effort he has willingly put in to the work in the school, both academic and extra-curricular.

Course choices – 2011

This week the students of Years 11, 12 and 13 were issued with the Curriculum book for 2011, along with course choice sheets. Year 10 students will get their copies of these next week. It is the time to make some choices for 2011. While we appreciate that for some students, final choices will depend on exam results, a clear indication of the sorts of courses, students are wanting will help us in planning the structure of the year and the timetable for 2011.

It will pay to remembers that not all course choices will be able to be followed and therefore it would pay to have alternatives considered.

The course choice sheets need to be returned to school by Friday 29 October.

PTA

There will be a PTA meeting held on Wednesday 27 October at 7pm in the staffroom. The agenda is to review the gala day and to look ahead to future activities.

Canteen Weekly Special

The special for the week of Tuesday 26 October to Thursday 28 October is Cheese and Spring Onion Stuffed potato cost $3.50

Congratulations

The Principal, staff and students extend sincere congratulations to Richard Provo. Richard was a student here from 1996 to 1999. He left to pursue an academic career and in the last weeks has been awarded his PhD degree. Dr Provo works as a research scientist associated with Auckland University. His PhD thesis was exploring a relatively new field dealing with fibre optics and the applications for improved communications.

OSPA Challenge – won by Year 9 students!

Over the last two weeks two grpoups of OAS students have been performing ion the OSPA Challenge. This is a drama competition involving seven groups of mostly adults writing and performing their own original plays. Last weekend the groups performed their first play and then had on;ly a week to write, rehearse and perform their new play in front of a full house at the OSPA theatre.

Two of the groups featured students from OAS. They were the Flight of the Magpies, featuring Joe and Leo Allely, (best name for a group) and the Jumping Jelly Beans featuring Abbey Austin, Hester Gerrand, Caryn Strang. Ellie Sharp and Gracie Moss.

In the grand final, which featured the best of the previous shows, the Jumping Jelly Beans play was voted the best and took out the championship. Well done, girls – a terrific achievement against the talent and experience of the adult teams.
