Dear Parents
New Curriculum Initiative
Each week, in our school assembly, we will be recognising a selection of students who have demonstrated our school values. At this week’s assembly, the following students were presented with certificates recognising excellence:
Ashleigh Loo (Yr 5): Working at a consistently high standard and being an example to others
Jedd Upfold (Yr 3):Excellence in listening skills
Alex Voysey (Yr 12): Displaying a positive and mature attitude and becoming very involved in his own learning.
River Group Swimming
This event will take place here at Onewhero on Tuesday 2 March, starting at 10:00am. All competent length swimmers from the junior school will be involved. We would like to have some assistance particularly with timekeeping and selling sausages (not at the same time!!). Please contact Judy at school before the event if you can assist with either of these activities.
Greenie Awards
The name drawn from the box this week was De Adre Tarawa-Hoete. De Adre is in Rm17 (Yr 7) and wins a canteen voucher.
Congratulations
To Ricky & Chloe Bingham on their effort at the Franklin A&P show last Sunday. Ricky entered in one event, Best Turned Out & Handled Yearling, and was placed 2nd. Chloe entered Ginger Nut in Calf Club & Junior Handlers and was placed 3rd in leading, 2nd in rearing, 2nd in beef type, 2nd for Best Turned Out & Handled Beef calf-12yrs & under, and Reserve Champion for Beef type. Well done, Ricky and Chloe.
Also to Emma Carey and Faye Carey. Emma participated in the Golden Horse section and gained second place in the Rider Class and third in the Best Paced and Mannered. Faye participated in the Hunter Class. She gained second place in that class and third in the best Paced and Mannered.
Congratulations too, to the Spicer family for the huge pumpkins they grew. All the children gained places in that competition.
Saleyard Duty
Work in the Saleyard Cafe and raise money for your children’s school expenses and activities. People needed for shifts in November. Contact Helen 2328883 or email.
Fund raising opportunity
We had just three volunteers for road marshall duties at the trail rides this Sunday and we have reluctantly informed the organisers that we cannot do the job. I would like to thank those who were prepared to volunteer for this fundraising opportunity.
PTA
A small but enthusiastic group met last evening to discuss plans for the year. As a result of that meeting, we have plans for a gala day later in the year, for a cooking demonstration in the middle of the year, for a motor-cross/trail ride/fun day sometime after March and for information evenings about National Standards. None of these plans are finalised as yet, but the group who met are keen to make progress on all these ideas and are actively seeking your help.
Watch this space – the next meeting should be soon and your ideas and your input will be sought and will be welcome.
Canteen Weekly Special
The special for the week Mon 1 March to Thurs 5 March is chicken Burritos–cost $3.00
Bible in Schools
Due to the increase in numbers of students and classes, we need lots of teachers and helpers to work in the Bible in Schools Programme. If you are willing please contact me – Helen 232 8883 or Deborah 232 8522. Training is provided – as is a great time and lots of fun.

Kristi Spicer's Giant Pumpkin
(Written by Ceilidh Jenkins)
Each year the Franklin A & P Society hold a competition for Giant Pumpkins. You can purchase the seeds from the showgrounds, on a set day, for $3. They grow fast and within about 2 weeks of careful 1 hour a day watering you can have some great pumpkins, ranging from 20kg-50kg in weight. Giant pumpkins are a light creamy colour and have a soft skin but a hard inner. The seeds are about the size of a 50 cent piece if not bigger. They are bruised easily and you chop the smaller ones off so the bigger ones can grow. You can’t eat them or you would end up in hospital or in a hole in the ground. They are so hard you have to cut them with a bandsaw.

A great day for everyone – fun and entertainment for all the family!!
Badminton
Sandra Stokes is looking at restarting the Onewhero Badminton Club this winter, in the school hall (possibly a Thursday night?). I would like some indication of the number of people who would be interested. It is envisaged this will be social badminton, as the people I have spoken to so far, haven’t played in a while!
