Dear Parents

We extend a very warm welcome to 2012 from the Principal and staff of the school to all parents and especially to those who are joining us for the first time this year.

It was great to see so many parents at our first assembly. We have had a very settled start to school and everybody is focussed on teaching and learning. Our school roll is around 460.

Teachers were keen to start teaching and the classes were all running smoothly and everybody was focussed on teaching and learning.

Staffing

We welcome a number of new staff who have been appointed to positions at our school this year. We have been fortunate to be able to extend the subjects offered in our senior school.

Mr Ken Sneddon: Head of Maths
Mr Alan Batten: Maths
Mr Kenneth Loh: Maths and Science
Mr Roger Barlow: Automotive
Miss Sian Wootton: Business Studies
Miss Nicole Rainey: Year 8
Mrs Bridget Dobbs: Sports Co ordinator

We welcome back Miss Amanda Caldwell who has spent a year working in various schools supporting teachers in Maths.

Apologies

At our final evening prizegiving we unfortunately omitted three students from our prize list.

Jaime McLean, Liam Carter and Daisy Patrick had achieved Full Attendance for the 2011 year.

To attend a year at school with out a day absent is very commendable.

We apologise for this oversight.

Beginning of the Year Reminders

Absences

If your child is ill or going to be absent please contact the office staff by 9am each day as it saves the office staff having to ring up your household.

When studying attendance patterns for the year there were a number of students who were having a long weekend on a regular basis or a spasmodic day off fairly regularly. Absences do have a negative affect on your child's learning.

If you take your children out of school during the day or you arrive late they need to sign in at the office.

Swimming

I would like to remind all parents that swimming is part of the school curriculum and all students are expected to participate. Could you please ensure that students bring togs and a towel each day.

It would be really helpful if all clothes were labelled as teachers spend a lot of time trying to sort clothes out and many unnamed clothes end up in lost property.

Hats

All junior children have to wear an O.A.S Hat outside during breaks.

Newsletters

Newsletters are published each week on a Thursday. The newsletter is normally given to the oldest child in each family at school. Parents: if you haven't got a newsletter by Friday each week, ask for it from your children. Ring the school for a replacement if necessary. We are very happy to send newsletters electronically if you ring the office with your email address. It will be sent to you each Thursday.

Stationery

All students have been given a notice about their stationery needs. We would appreciate these being purchased quickly to enable students to start their programmes with the correct equipment.

Buses

If your child is going to somebody else's place after school and they are travelling on a bus please write a note and get it handed in at the office or ring the office as we have had occasions where we don't know where children are supposed to be going and this is difficult for the bus controller.

If you pick your child up by car could you please inform the bus controllers so that they don't waste time looking for students around the school.

Spirit of New Zealand

The Year 10 group selected for the Spirit Team are holding a major fundraising event. This will be a weekend Horse Trek on the 11-12th February over Simpson's and Fyers' farms. Cost $150, this includes meals and camping. Any queries please contact Jenny 2328944

Canteen Weekly Special

The special for the week Tue 7th February to Thurs 10th February is Beef Burgers cost $3.50

Please note: Cookie Time cookies are now $1.20

Camp

Our Yr12 and Yr13 students are on a leadership camp at The Pinnacles this week. This is a real opportunity for them to challenge themselves and learn a number of new skills which will help them throughout the year. We wish them well.
