ALCOHOL AND DRUGS POLICY

Onewhero Area School Policy Health and Safety (National Administration Guideline 5)


Purpose

The use of illegal drugs, non prescribed drugs, alcohol and and solvent abuse will not be condoned at Onewhero Area School. Students will be made aware of the legal and health consequences resulting from their use.

Definitions

1. To clearly define expectations for students and adults regarding the use of alcohol at school and school functions.

2. To recognise the importance of education in encouraging students to make responsible choices regarding the use of alcohol and drugs in later life.

Guidelines

1. The school will abide by the laws of New Zealand that relate to possession and supply of alcohol and drugs.

2. No student shall consume, use or carry alcohol at school; on any school trip; at any school function; or after school while in school uniform.

3. Students must be reminded regularly both in writing and verbally, that the bringing of illegal drugs to school and their consumption at school is absolutely forbidden.

4. No staff member, adult or caregiver will be permitted to possess, supply or consume alcohol while on any trip or EOTC activity.

5. School health programmes will offer information and skills to help students establish responsible attitudes to alcohol, drugs and other illicit substances.

6. Counselling will be made available for students who have problems with alcohol, drugs and other illicit substances.

7. Clearly defined disciplinary procedures will follow any breach of guideline (2) above.

8. The school will abide by the laws of New Zealand which pertain to the possession, use and supply of illegal, non prescribed drugs and solvents.

9. No staff member, adult or student will be permitted to possess, supply/consume or use any illegal, non prescribed drug or solvent while at school, at any school function or on any school trip.

10. All reports of drugs, alcohol and other illicit substances in the school must be promptly and rigorously investigated.

11. The NZ Police will be notified immediately and asked to investigate any incidents involving drugs.

12. Any student found with alcohol or drugs will likely result in suspension or stand down from school, their parents and caregivers notified and the case referred to the board of trustees disciplinary committee.

13. Where a student has been suspended for using illegal, non prescribed drugs, alcohol or solvent abuse while at school the student then to agree to drug testing as a condition of reinstatement to the school.
