MANAGEMENT OF STUDENT BEHAVIOUR POLICY
Health and Safety (National Administration Guideline 5)
RATIONALE
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that pupils can learn, and teachers can teach, in a supportive, secure and safe environment. Such an environment must be free from verbal, emotional and physical harassment and encompass a holistic approach. It will be achieved only when all members of the school community treat each other with respect, and commit themselves to the creation of a positive and tolerant school culture.
PURPOSES
1. To seek opportunities within and outside the school to enhance students' self esteem and interpersonal skills
2. To assist students to become increasingly responsible for their own behaviour and consequences
3. To establish guidelines for acceptable behaviour for students at Onewhero Area school.
GUIDELINES
1. There will be a Code of Conduct/Charter for students at Onewhero Area School that will:
define acceptable standards of behaviour which students will be expected to observe;
be consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi obligations and equity provisions expressed in the Charter;
be given to all families with students at Onewhero Area School, and posted in all classrooms, so that all students are informed of its provisions;
be consistently applied to all levels during school hours and in school-related activities beyond the school.
2. There will be a Management Plan developed by the professional staff, and approved by the Board of trustees, that will outline the implementation to the Code of Conduct.
The Management Plan will:
include a statement of the principles that govern all members of the school community. It is expected that adults will act as role models of the kinds of behaviour that are expected from those they interact with;
include rules that govern the daily life of the classroom and the school as a whole;
accentuate the positive, but also establish clear consequences for the breaches of the Code of Conduct;
ensure adequate supervision of students at all times, and enable staff to intervene early in conflict situations, and to listen sympathetically to students' concerns;
involve parents and caregivers in the management of students' behaviour at school.
3. The management plan will include ways to encourage and direct parent helpers, to inform parents of its provisions, and also establish a clear procedure between parents and school.
4. When students' problems require specialised treatment, staff will consult with parents in seeking the help of outside agencies.
5. Where appropriate, the school will seek to introduce specific classroom programmes that develop students' skills in anger management, conflict resolution, negotiation and problem solving eg strategies such as peer mediation.
6. All school programmes, both curricular and extra-curricular, will seek opportunities to develop and foster positive social development in students.
