CAREERS AND GUIDANCE POLICYOnewhero Area School Policy: Health and Safety (National Administration Guideline 5) RATIONALE To help students develop the understanding, knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to effectively transition to the world beyond school, through access to a range of qualifications, career support and life skills training. PURPOSE 1. To provide accessible, accurate and up-to-date career information and guidance to all students. 2. To foster students' self-awareness and personal development. 3. To develop knowledge, understanding and a wide outlook in relation to post school life. 4. To provide a range of opportunities and experiences, this will encourage students to make informed choices about their future education, training, employment and career choices. 5. To effectively provide students with the skills to manage the transition from school to adult and working life. 6. To meet the requirements of the National Education Priorities as defined by the Ministry of Education (NAG 1.6). GUIDELINES 1. Career Education and Guidance at Onewhero Area School will operate: as an ideal guiding principle across the curriculum, with every teacher as a career educator, utilizing relevant areas of the curriculum with specific career education programmes for year levels 7 to 13, this will include guidance with: subject choice, career information, work related skills, study skills, work based learning, tertiary and other training opportunities alternative courses designed to meet identified student needs 2. Career Education will foster personal growth and social and practical skills development through the involvement of students in the community by means of work exploration, work-based learning (Gateway), STAR and visits with tertiary institutions and businesses. 3. Learning will be experiential and student-centred, empowering young people to recognize their potential and take responsibility for their future directions. 4. There will be provision for sufficient, appropriate information, and individual guidance and career counseling support to be available to all students. 5. Information for parents and students will be provided through the careers room at school, career expos, newsletters, the curriculum guide, liaison visits and the internet. 6. The careers advisor is responsible for displaying and updating all career information stored in the careers room as well as displays in the main corridor and providing teachers with related and updated material for display in specialist subject rooms or areas. 7. Through KAMAR, monitor destinations of school leavers who are not intending to re enroll at another school. 8. All Ministry of Education targeted funding (Career Information Grant, STAR and Gateway) will be made available and managed to meet intended objectives, as approved by the Board of Trustees. 9. Professional development opportunities will be encouraged and supported for staff in order to maintain current best practice of career education delivery. 10.Maintaining professional working relationships with Career Services Rapuara, the Tertiary Education Commission, ITO's, business partnerships, local training providers, tertiary institutions, and other secondary school Career Advisors, STAR and Gateway personnel. 11.The evaluation, monitoring and reporting of career education and guidance programmes will meet specific career education and guidance goals from the annual plan as well as National guidelines.
