HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

Onewhero Area School Policy Health and Safety (National Administration Guideline 5)


RATIONALE:

According to NAG 5 the Board must provide a safe physical environment for students and employees.

PURPOSES:

1. To provide a safe, clean working and learning environment.

2. To comply with legislation concerning occupational health and safety and with Health and Safety Code.

3. To establish safe methods and safe practices.

GUIDELINES:

1. Employees will be provided with basic health and safety rules. As part of the induction process and each time a job description is revised employees will be provided with basic health and safety rules. This will be reflected in the induction notes.

2. Advise employees of hazards in their work and how to avoid of deal with these hazards. All hazards will be identified in the hazard register.

3. Provide employees with information on the safe storage and handling of chemicals. All hazards will be identified in the hazard register.

4. Record and investigate all injuries occurring in the workplace. An accident register will be maintained detailing accidents to both staff and students. All employees who suffer an accident in the workplace will fill out an accident form. This form will be reviewed by the principal or deputy principal who will investigate the hazard involved. The Board will be informed of an hazard requiring action. The accident register for student accidents will be available to designated people on request. The principal will be responsible for reporting to the Board any accident involving serious injury which occurs in the school or during an off-site activity Principal reports to the Board will detail such events.

5. Provide an affective emergency evacuation procedure to cope with all likely emergencies. An emergency handbook will be available for all staff and the parent community. The handbook will be revised annually.

6. Carry out regular inspections to identify potential health hazards and take all reasonable steps to remove or reduce them. The property officer will be responsible for filling in the form for checking the school property for hazards and report any such hazard to the principal.

7. Provide sufficient training in the use of equipment or machinery.
