CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY

(National Administration Guideline 6 - Legislation)

RATIONALE

Onewhero Area School recognises there is a spiritual component to the education process, and while the school cannot provide these programmes, it supports the availability of Christian Religious education programmes provided by agencies outside the school.

PURPOSES

1. To cater for the spiritual needs of students.

2. To involve the values of humility, aroha and tolerance.

3. To ensure that all students who participate in the programmes and those who do not, are still protected by the health and safety considerations of the school.

GUIDELINES

1. Instruction will be Christian, non-sectarian and taken by tutors representing local Christian churches who are approved by the Christian Education Commission. These teachers will be police-vetted before they commence teaching in the school.

2. The junior school will close for the purpose of Christian Religious Education at a time approved by the Board of Trustees.

3. Each year the syllabus and tutors are to be approved by the Board of trustees. An outline of the programme to be undertaken will be forwarded to the Board of trustees for approval in March. Tutors are required to follow the approved programme.

4. Parents will be advised as to the content of the programme each year and given the opportunity to withdraw their students from the programme.

5. Students, who parents have informed the school in writing that they do not wish their student to receive Christian Religious Education, will not attend. Parents may choose to take their students home during the time school is close. Facilities will also be made available for students to be supervised by a volunteer from the community.

6. The school reserves the right to remove a student, who behaviour is inappropriate in this programme.

7. Any concerns regarding the programme, its content, tutors or management practices should be referred to the Board of Trustees.
